We read all of the "How tos" that came with it and started on our way of getting the cat to use it. There was success within the first 3 weeks, back in September. Our vacation was coming up and so we pushed Slate to get acclimated faster than he wanted and scared him off for a couple of months!
Our main problem was that we only had one cat! For cat-lovers, you can see that as problem by itself, but we have a SCARDY CAT.
In December, we finally had victory with the Litter-Robot! I kept it off until the night. The normal time I would clean the ordinary box was at night, so I would pretend to clean it at night by turning it on. I would close the door first. I did this for a couple of weeks and then finally I could leave it on! Success!
That was the good news, the reason it's taken me so long to post this update is the bad news..
One month later we lost Slate.
As it turns out Slate had a chronic condition that got bad at the young age of 10. He had bladder stones. When cleaning his box, I'd notice that he hadn't peed during the day. This didn't happen often, but the next day there'd be dirty litter so I didn't think much of it. In January 2015, it was two days without peeing or eating. My husband noticed that he was trying to pee in a cardboard box. That's when we knew it was an urgent problem.
It's still too hard to talk about everything that happenend. We strongly feel the vet made a mistake by giving the cat several medicines, the bad one was to shrink his bladder (after draining it with a syringe) without doing surgery to remove the stones. His bladder ruptured.
4 days and $3000 later I was holding him while he took his last breath.
We still cry when we think about him. He was one of a kind. I've added some of our favorite pictures below.
